van Eyken, Tony; Grydeland, Tom; Strømme, Anja; La Hoz, Cesar (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2002)
In this article we want to present the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) in some detail, as well as some of the instruments of interest for ionospheric and magnetospheric research that are located in the vicinity of it. We particularly describe how this instrument cluster, close to the geomagnetic conjugate point of the Chinese Antarctic Zhongshan station, can contribute to inter-hemispheric coordinated ...
    • A comparison of overshoot modelling with observations of polar mesospheric summer echoes at radar frequencies of 56 and 224 MHz

Havnes, Ove; Pinedo Nava, Henry; La Hoz, Cesar; Senior, Andrew; Hartquist, Thomas W.; Rietveld, Michael T; Kosch, Michael J. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015)
We have compared radar observations of polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSEs) modulated by artificial electron heating, at frequencies of 224 MHz (EISCAT VHF) and 56 MHz (MORRO). We have concentrated on 1 day of observation, lasting ~ 3.8 h. The MORRO radar, with its much wider beam, observes one or more PMSE layers all the time while the VHF radar observes PMSEs in 69% of the time. Statistically ...
    • Coordinated Cluster/Double Star and ground-based observations of dayside reconnection signatures on 11 February 2004

La Hoz, Cesar (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2011)
A number of flux transfer events (FTEs) were observed between 09:00 and 12:00UT on 11 February 2004, during southward and dawnward IMF, while the Cluster spacecraft array moved outbound through the northern, highaltitude cusp and dayside high-latitude boundary layer, and the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft was crossing the dayside low-latitude magnetopause into the magnetosheath south of the ecliptic ...
    • Dust charging and density conditions deduced from observations of PMWE modulated by artificial electron heating

Havnes, Ove; La Hoz, Cesar; Rietveld, Michael T; Kassa, Meseret; Baroni, Giovanni; Biebricher, Alexander (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2011)
We present an analysis of relatively strong Polar Mesospheric Winter Echoes (PMWE) under artificial electron heating that changes the PMWE intensity. A major purpose is to find reliable estimates of the relaxation time of the heater modified PMWE to their undisturbed state during the heater switch-off phase; the implications regarding charge/discharge mechanisms; and to exploit the diagnostic potential ...
    • Dynamic rayed aurora and enhanced ion-acoustic radar echoes

Blixt, Erik Mårten; Ivchenko, N.; Hagfors, T.; Grydeland, Tom; Trondsen, T.S.; La Hoz, Cesar; Lanchester, B.S.; Løvhaug, Unni Pia (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2005-01-31)
The generation mechanism for naturally enhanced ion-acoustic echoes is still debated. One important issue is how these enhancements are related to auroral activity. All events of enhanced ion-acoustic echoes observed simultaneously with the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) and with high-resolution narrow field-of-view auroral imagers have been collected and studied. Characteristic of all the ...
    • The electron energy distribution during HF pumping, a picture painted with all colors.

Rietveld, Michael T.; Gustavsson, B.; Sergienko, T.; Grydeland, Tom; La Hoz, Cesar; Kosch, M.J.; Brändström, B.U.E.; Leyser, T.B.; Isham, B.; Gallop, P.; Aso, T.; Ejiri, M.; Steen, A.; Kaila, K.; Jussila, J.; Holma, H. (Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2005-07-28)
The shape of the electron energy distribution has long been a central question in the field of highfrequency radio-induced optical emission experiments. This report presents estimates of the electron energy distribution function, fe(E), from 0 to 60 eV, based on optical multiwavelength (6300, 5577, 8446, 4278 A° ) data and 930-MHz incoherent scatter radar measurements of ion temperature, electron ...
    • An evaluation of International Reference Ionosphere electron density in the polar cap and cusp using EISCAT Svalbard radar measurements

Bjoland, Lindis Merete; Belyey, Vasyl; Løvhaug, Unni Pia; La Hoz, Cesar (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2016-09-13)
Incoherent scatter radar measurements are an important source for studies of ionospheric plasma parameters. In this paper the EISCAT Svalbard radar (ESR) long-term database is used to evaluate the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model. The ESR started operations in 1996, and the accumulated database up to 2012 thus covers 16 years, giving an overview of the ionosphere in the polar cap and ...
    • First modulation of high-frequency polar mesospheric summer echoes by radio heating of the ionosphere

Senior, Andrew; Mahmoudian, Alireza; Pinedo Nava, Henry; La Hoz, Cesar; Rietveld, Michael T; Scales, Wayne A.; Kosch, M.J. (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2014-07-23)
The first high-frequency (HF, 8 MHz) observations of the modulation of polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE) by artificial radio heating of the ionosphere are presented and compared to observations at 224 MHz and model predictions. The experiments were performed at the European Incoherent Scatter facility in northern Norway. It is shown that model results are in qualitative and partial quantitative ...
    • An interferometer experiment to explore the aspect angle dependence of stimulated electromagnetic emission spectra.

Rietveld, Michael T.; Isham, B.; Hagfors, T.; Belyey, Vasyl; La Hoz, Cesar; Khudukon, B.; Brekke, Asgeir; Yurik, R.Yu; Tereshchenko, E.D.; Grill, M.; Heinselman, C. (Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2005-01-31)
When the Earth's ionosphere is irradiated by a radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic wave of sufficiently high power density and tuned to match a natural E- or F-region plasma frequency, ionospheric magnetoionic wave modes may be excited and may generate RF electromagnetic sideband waves via nonlinear interactions. These secondary emissions, which may then escape from the ionosphere, have been termed ...
    • Interferometric radar observations of filamented structures due to plasma instabilities and their relation to dynamic auroral rays.

Grydeland, Tom; Hagfors, T.; Trondsen, T.S.; Blixt, Erik Mårten; Løvhaug, Unni Pia; La Hoz, Cesar (Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2004-04-02)
Several explanations have been proposed for Naturally Enhanced ion-acoustic Echoes observed at midand high-latitude Incoherent Scatter observatories. A decisive measure for distinguishing between these explanations is whether or not simultaneously observed up- and downshifted enhancement occur simultaneously, or if they are the result of temporal and/or spatial averaging. The EISCAT Svalbard ...
    • Localized mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radar echoes from the E region at 69 degrees N: Properties and physical mechanisms

Rapp, Markus; Leitert, Lasse; Latteck, Ralph; Zecha, Marius; Hoffmann, Peter; Höffner, Josef; Hoppe, Ulf-Peter; La Hoz, Cesar; Thrane, Eivind (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2011-02-25)
We present the first observations, to our knowledge, of a new class of high‐latitude mesosphere‐stratosphere‐troposphere radar echoes from the E region as observed with the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research wind radar during the period 2004–2008. These echoes occur primarily during the summer months and in the altitude range from 93 to 114 km, with a pronounced peak of maximum ...
    • A procedure to correct the effects of a relative delay between the quadrature components of radar signals at base band.

Westman, A.; Grydeland, Tom; Belyey, Vasyl; La Hoz, Cesar (Journal article; Peer reviewed; Tidsskriftartikkel, 2005-01-31)
The real and imaginary parts of baseband signals are obtained from a real narrow–band signal by quadrature mixing, i.e. by mixing with cosine and sine signals at the narrow band’s selected center frequency. We address the consequences of a delay between the outputs of the quadrature mixer, which arise when digital samples of the quadrature baseband signals are not synchronised, i.e. when ...

Vickers, Hannah; Kosch, M. J.; Sutton, E.; Ogawa, Y.; La Hoz, Cesar (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2013)
Coupling between the ionized and neutral atmosphere through particle collisions allows an indirect study of the neutral atmosphere through measurements of ionospheric plasma parameters. We estimate the neutral density of the upper thermosphere above ~250 km with the European Incoherent Scatter Svalbard Radar (ESR) using the year-long operations of the International Polar Year from March 2007 to ...
